About Teignmouth

Teignmouth Sea Front with the Ness in the background, May 2008One of Teignmouth's claims to fame is that it was the last place in England to be invaded by a foreign power when, in 1690, the French landed and burned the town down.

The town lies on the northern side of the estuary of the River Teign in south Devon. It faces the small village of Shaldon and the red sandstone headland called the 'Ness'. The two settlements are linked by the Teign Ferry, a passenger ferry that is supposedly the longest continually operating ferry in England having been in operation since the 10th century.

The town has strong maritime links, with its own port that has operated since the 13th century. In the 19th century large volumes of granite was exported from New Quay having been brought down from Haytor via the Haytor Granite Tramway and by canal along the Stover Canal. The new London Bridge was built using Haytor granite exported from the town. Today the the port exports mainly clay and imports mainly timber and fertiliser. See the Teignmouth Harbour Commission website for more information and details of expected shipping in port. Photos of ships that have passed through Teignmouth can be viewed on Chris Cheetham's website.

Further information will be added as time permits....
